20 random posts : : my biggest life lesson (so far)

I'm coming into this post completely stumped.  It's been sitting as a draft for about two months.  And by draft I mean I wrote the title, and thought that was enough progress to let it go for awhile.  Ha!

My biggest life lesson...

I've had a really hard time narrowing it down, but I think I'd have to say that two lessons I am consistently, constantly learning are about hope and God's love.

I've always had a hard time figuring out how to hope in a way that honors God.  Do I actually tell Him what I want to happen in "fill-in-the-blank"?  Is that too bold?  And how do I actually hope when I keep reminding myself that "this" might not be His will, and it might not happen, and I still have to trust Him and be joyful then?

Yeah, I've thought about this a lot.

Over the years, I've learned a lot about hoping in God, but I'm also really confused about some of it.  I've learned that I will be okay if things don't work out like I want them to.  I've also learned that sometimes God allows me to see what things would be like if I actually got the thing I hoped for.  And I realize that I don't actually want it.  I think one of the most difficult things to do when trying to hope in a way that honors God is to hope only for pure things--only those that honor Him and will make both Him and you happy.

I remember there was one time specifically when I wanted to hope for something, but I was really afraid to.  I decided to write about it in my journal.  In my journal there's a verse at the bottom of every page, and the one on that page "just happened" (as if the Lord didn't know about it) to be Romans 15:13 -

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

And everything turned out to be okay.

The second thing I feel like I'm always learning is that God still loves me after all I've done.  I have failed Him time and time again, but it's really not about my failure--it's about Jesus' success.  And His love will never cease.

"I have loved you with an everlasting love"
Jeremiah 31:3

Now go be filled with hope and love. :)

dirty little hands

Over the past two days I have been reading "Kisses from Katie" by Katie Davis, a young woman serving the Lord through her ministry to children in Uganda.  I have been loving this book because Katie is doing exactly what I want to do in India once I graduate--minister to orphans, bring them into my home, love on them as Jesus would.

Reading this book got me to thinking about my time in Mexico in November.  I only went for about 24 hours total, but I just loved my time at the orphanage there.  Children are so eager to love on anyone who comes their way, and these kids were no different.

In the very first chapter of "Kisses from Katie", Katie recalls an experience she had with a little boy who hurt himself, and how she was able to comfort him.

On the second day that I was in Mexico, I tried to get to know a little boy named Arian.  I had a really hard time getting the pronunciation of his name right, and I could tell he was frustrated with me.  He was quiet, and not very eager to get to know me.

I went outside with the kids to watch them play, and while I was out there Arian tripped and fell, making his nose and lips bleed, as well as scuffing up his hands so that they bled.  He sat there for a moment crying inaudibly until I rushed over to him, hauled him up off the ground, and took him to the bathroom to clean him up.

There weren't any tissues in the bathroom, but I'd brought some with me on a whim (thank God for that whim!).  Arian stopped crying as soon as I started taking care of him, but my heart just broke for him as I cleaned him up.  His eyes held such sadness.  I gave him a wet tissue to hold to his bleeding nose while I gently wiped the blood off of his forehead and lips.

Arian's poor little hands were scuffed and bleeding, and I couldn't help but kiss them as I cleaned them up.  Now you have to understand what a huge step this was for me.  I was in Mexico.  I was terrified of getting some sort of disease or something from germs or contaminated water.  And I kissed this little boy's hands.

And then we went and watched a movie with all the other children.  Arian let me put my arms around him and hold him the entire time.  And I gave out two entire packs of chicle to all the kids.  Chicle = gum.

I worry a lot about my plans to serve in missions after I graduate.  I'm too young, too inexperienced, too uneducated, too single, too naive.  But the Lord has been teaching me that He has made me exactly who I am so that I can do the work He has for me.  As I've been memorizing 1 Corinthians 1 He's really been driving that home: "God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world, and the despised, God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God."  He has given me a desire to serve children.  And I'll kiss 1000 more dirty little hands to help show God's love to those kids.

And He holds all of them, including Arian, closer than I ever could.

This is a new song that I wrote about a week ago.  Hope you enjoy it!  Tell me what you think!

today's the day!

Today Rachel and I are moving to Glorieta!  It is so weird to actually be leaving for a few months, even if we will be able to visit.  It's amazing how much stuff I have to bring. :)

I wanted to kind of document this summer, so I bought myself a camera!  I only got it yesterday, and I got the memory card today, so I wanted to share some of the first pictures I've taken.

My lovely mother, who is sick today! :(, made Rachel and I each two quilts.  This first one of mine has a bunch of different squares with quotes about hope and rejoicing and singing.

This one is my graduation quilt.  My mom sent out squares of fabric to all my friends and family and they each wrote something encouraging on their square.  It's so awesome to be able to read all of them!

This one is from Elizabeth.

And this one is from Rachel, the lovely fiancee (!!!) of Jeremy!

I don't know about weekdates; this is, I'm going to try to do one every week, but I don't know if they'll be on Mondays anymore.  I definitely think this Monday isn't going to work, but we'll see!  I'll talk to you all as soon as I can!

some tastes of love

For today I wanted to include some excerpts from books, and some Scripture, that tells of the beauty that love is.  Happy Valentine's Day!

This first excerpt is taken from "Passion and Purity" by Elisabeth Elliot, and speaks of what she was learning as she learned to trust God in her relationship with the man who would become her husband, Jim.

*Love interprets things in favor of the one loved.  I had a long way to go to learn that, but the principle is clear enough in Paul's description: "Love is patient...never selfish, not quick to take offense.  Love keeps no score of wrongs...  There is nothing love cannot face; there is no limit to its faith, its hope, and its endurance."
The trouble, of course, is that we must learn to love people.  People are sinners.  Love must be patient when it is tempted (by the delays of other people) to be impatient.  Love must not be selfish, even if other people are.  Love does not take offence, though people are offensive sometimes.  There are wrongs, but love won't keep score.  there are things to be faced, but nothing love can't face, things to try love's faith, discourage its hope, and call for its endurance; but it keeps right on trusting, hoping, and enduring.  Love never ends.

Then a drop of heavenly love
Fell upon me from above,
And by secret mystic art
Reached the center of my heart.
-- Charles Spurgeon

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! It is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although its height be taken.
Love's not times fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with brief hours and weeks,
But it bears out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

-- William Shakespeare

I just like this song by Frank Sinatra.  I think it's sweet.

When Jonathan Edwards was twenty years old, he wrote a love letter to the woman who would later become his wife, 13-year-old Sarah Pierpont.  I think it's really beautiful to see what qualities he valued in her most.

They say there is a young lady in New Haven who is beloved of that Great Being, who made and rules the world, and that there are certain seasons in which this Great Being, in some way or other invisible, comes to her and fills her mind with exceeding sweet delight; and that she hardly cares for any thing, except to meditate on Him—that she expects after a while to be received up where He is, to be raised up out of the world and caught up into heaven; being assured that He loves her too well to let her remain at a distance from Him always. There she is to dwell with Him, and to be ravished with His love and delight for ever. Therefore, if you present all the world before her, with the richest of its treasures, she disregards it and cares not for it, and is unmindful of any pain or affliction. She has a strange sweetness in her mind, and singular purity in her affections; is most just and conscientious in all her conduct; and you could not persuade her to do any thing wrong or sinful, if you would give her all the world, lest she should offend this Great Being. She is of a wonderful sweetness, calmness, and universal benevolence of mind; especially after this Great God has manifested himself to her mind. She will sometimes go about from place to place, singing sweetly; and seems to be always full of joy and pleasure; and no one knows for what. She loves to be alone, walking in the fields and groves, and seems to have some one invisible always conversing with her.

 This song is sweet too.

Finally, here is a reminder of the best love there is: the love of God.

**When God Weeps

“The face that Moses had begged to see—was forbidden to see—was slapped bloody (Ex. 33:19-20). The thorns that God had sent to curse the earth’s rebellion now twisted around his own brow…
“On your back with you!” One raises a mallet to sink in the spike. But the soldier’s heart must continue pumping as he readies the prisoner’s wrist. Someone must sustain the soldier’s life minute by minute, for no man had this power on his own. Who supplies breath to his lungs? Who gives energy to his cells? Who holds his molecules together? Only by the Son do “all things hold together” (Col. 1:17). The victim wills that the soldier live on—He grants the warriors continued existence. The man swings.
As the man swings, the Son recalls how He and the Father first designed the medial nerve of the human forearm—the sensations it would be capable of. The design proves flawless—the nerves perform exquisitely. “Up you go!” They lift the cross. God is on display in His underwear and can scarcely breathe.
But these pains are a mere warm-up to His other and growing dread. He begins to feel a foreign sensation. Somewhere during this day an unearthly foul odor began to waft, not around His nose, but His heart. He feels dirty. Human wickedness starts to crawl upon His spotless being—the living excrement from our souls. The apple of His Father’s eye turns brown with rot.
His Father! He must face His Father like this!
From heaven the Father now rouses Himself like a lion disturbed, shakes his man, and roars against the shriveling remnant of a Man hanging on a cross. Never has the Son seen the Father look at Him so, never felt even the least of His hot breath. But the roar shakes the unseen world and darkens the visible sky. The Son does not recognize these eyes.
“Son of Man! Why have You behaved so? You have cheated, lusted, stolen, gossiped—murdered, envied, hated, lied. You have cursed, robbed, overspent, overeaten—fornicated, disobeyed, embezzled, and blasphemed. Oh, the duties You have shirked, the children You have abandoned! Who has ever so ignored the poor, so played the coward, so belittled My name? have You ever held Your razor tongue? What a self-righteous, pitiful drunk—You, who molest young boys, peddle killer drugs, travel in cliques, and mock your parents. Who gave You the boldness to rig elections, foment revolutions, torture animals, and worship demons? Does the list never end! Splitting families, raping virgins, acting smugly, playing the pimp—buying politicians, practicing exhortation, filming pornography, accepting bribes. You have burned down buildings, perfected terrorist tactics, founded false religions, traded in slaves—relishing each morsel and bragging about it all. I hate, loathe these things in You! Disgust for everything about You consumes Me! Can You not feel My wrath?”
Of course the Son is innocent. He is blamelessness itself. The Father knows this. But the divine pair have an agreement, and the unthinkable must now take place. Jesus will be treated as if personally responsible for every sin ever committed.
The Father watches as His heart’s treasure, the mirror-image of Himself, sinks drowning into raw, liquid sin. Jehovah’s stored rage against humankind from every century exploded in a single direction.
“Father! Father! Why have You forsaken Me?!”
But heaven stops its ears. The Son stares up at the One who cannot, who will not, reach down or reply.
The Trinity had planned it. The Son endured it. The Spirit enabled Him. The Father rejected the Son whom He loved. Jesus, the God-man from Nazareth, perished. The Father accepted His sacrifice for sin and was satisfied. The Rescue was accomplished.”
-- Steven Estes and Joni Eareckson Tada
We love because He first loved us.

Tonight Chloe and I made cookies for Valentine's Day tomorrow.  It was so much fun! (even though I hate baking)  She made it fun.

This one was for Daddy.

She abandoned me after icing a few cookies, so I had to finish the rest.  Lookin' pretty good, huh?

Laboring as to the Lord

Happy Labor Day, everybody!

Around here, holidays like Labor Day don't do much to change our daily life.  Daddy works at home, so it isn't like this is a special day off of work, and with Ellie being homeschooled she takes about one day a week off.  Rachel and I are only going to CNM on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so we didn't get a day off of school.  But today has just been amazing so far!  I have all of my homework done, so what I've been doing today is just stuff to get a little bit ahead.  Mama, Chloe, and I went to Walmart to get stuff for our Labor Day cookout and, wouldn't you know it, God blessed us with three mountain bikes, one each for me, Rachel, and Ellie, on sale for just $29 each!  We've all been thinking that it would be nice to buy bikes, and these are just fantastic (fantastically cheap too)!  This afternoon we went and tested them out all together, and then made shish kebabs while Ellie made chocolate chip zucchini bread (amazing).  Right now I'm taking a break from psychology before we go eat dinner together.  The rest of our evening plans include a Bible study together, maybe some singing, as well as making smores, using up some leftover fireworks, and watching a Steven Curtis Chapman DVD we've had for about three months and still haven't watched.

My point to all of this is just to say that, amidst all the hubbub of starting college and continuing on at McDonalds and everything else, there is peace in the Lord.  He is showing me how He will set me free from worry and stress if only I'll give it all to Him and realize that, really, what is there to worry about?  The worst thing that could happen is that I fail all four of my college classes (I dropped my chemistry), and if that happens I can just retake them or do something with my life that doesn't require a degree.  I want to take care of orphans, after all, and raising kids doesn't require a college degree.  Teaching kids does, though, and that's what I'm leaning towards majoring in now.  If that's His will for me, God will see me through!  In the end it's all a matter of perspective.  Why on earth would I worry?  It won't add a single hour; rather, it will waste the hours God has given me in which to glorify Him.  Let's use this time wisely, and labor for Him.

And He said to His disciples, “For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds! And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life’s span? If then you cannot do even a very little thing, why do you worry about other matters? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith! And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not keep worrying. For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you. Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.
 Luke 12:22-32

Love Through Me, Even Me

Love through me, Love of God;
There is no love in me.
O Fire of love, light Thou the love
   That burns perpetually.

Flow through me, Peace of God;
   Calm River, flow until
No wind can blow, no current stir
   A ripple of self-will.

Shine through me, Joy of God;
Make me like Thy clear air
That Thou dost pour Thy colors through,
As though it were not there.

O blessed Love of God,
That all may taste and see
How good Thou art, once more I pray:
   Love through me--even me.

Love Has a Price Tag

We eat breakfast with Mr. Smith, a very handsome man with white hair, ruddy skin and bright blue eyes. He is wearing a blue shirt and blue sweater. He tells us a story which brings into sharp focus the words of the wedding vows—“in sickness and in health, for better, for worse.” His wife has been a patient at Milledgeville for three years.

“When she first got sick I carried her everywhere. I did. The doctor said, ‘She’ll get worse, every week and every month. So if you want to go on any trips or anywhere, go now.’ We had some good times, me and her. But the doctor said, ‘You cain’t stand it. You won’t be able to stand it.’ Well, I said, ‘Ah’m’on’ hang on long’s I can.’

“I took care of her for five years, but I lost fifty-two pounds just from worry. I was so tense they broke three needles tryin’ to put a shot in my arm. Well, I carried her to twenty-five doctors but they couldn’t do nothin’. It’s brain deter’ation, they told me. I did everything for her. I dressed her and fed her and everything, but it like to whup me and if it hadn’t of been for the good Lord I’da never made it. Doctor said, ‘I’da sworn you’d never last six months.’ But a lot of people were prayin’ for me. Oh yes. But finally I had to give up and put her here.

“She cain’t do nothin’. Cain’t move or speak or hear. She’s in the prebirth position, legs and arms locked, heels locked up tight behind. You cain’t straighten her out. But I come every other day. I go in and kiss her ‘bout a dozen times, jes’ love her to death. I talk to her. She don’t hear, but she knows my touch.

“Well.” Mr. Smith finished his story. “I work for the florist here. Volunteer work, you know. I go around the wards, carrying flowers.”

We went later to see Mrs. Smith. If ever there was a sight to confound a man’s love for a woman, to strain to the breaking point the most potent human passion, we saw it in that stark white crib—a crumbled scrap of inert humanity. But there is a love that is strong as death, a love many waters cannot quench, floods cannot drown.

The Soul That Loves God Finds Him Everywhere

Oh Thou, by long experience tried,
Near whom no grief can long abide
My Love! how full of sweet content
I pass my years of banishment.

All scenes alike engaging prove
To souls impress'd with sacred love,
Where'er they dwell, they dwell in Thee,
In heav'n, in earth or on the sea.

To me remains nor place nor time,
My country is in ev'ry clime,
I can be calm and free from care
On any shore, since God is there.

While place we seek, or place we shun,
The soul find happiness in none,
But with a God to guide our way,
'Tis equal joy to go or stay.

Could I be cast where Thou art not,
That were indeed a dreadful, lot,
But regions none remote I call,
Secure of finding God in all.

My country, Lord, art Thou alone,
Nor other can I claim or own,
The point where all my wishes meet,
My law, my love, life's only sweet.

The Shelter of God's Promises

I originally got The Shelter of God's Promises from Book Sneeze because I thought the cover looked cool, and it would probably be a good idea to review some of God's promises.  I didn't expect the book to be what it was.  It was excellent.  In most books I've read that talk about God's promises, the author just gives a couple of verses applicable to a certain subject, tells you to "press on and be strong", and that's about it.  One of the things I most enjoyed about this book was how Sheila Walsh used a different passage of the Bible for each promise and explained it more fully, expanding it to show just how amazing each promise was and is.  One of my favorite chapters was probably the one whose basis was the Samaritan woman, and just the love and mercy Jesus showed to her.  All in all I think this was a great book, and would recommend it to anybody who's looking for something to read!
