keys are the best things ever

So I started my new job as a Walmart cashier on Saturday, and I actually think I'm really going to like it, as least once I get the hang of everything.  It's just a lot to learn all at once.  But I'm working with a ton of really nice people, customers aren't too bad, and I'm actually getting trained properly.  After McDonalds and just being thrown out there without any real training, I'll never take that sort of thing for granted again.

My biggest challenge so far has been my locker.  Now, you have to remember that I was homeschooled--I've never had a locker or used one of these combination padlocks before.  So my manager gave it to me last Saturday and I was like Oh...so you're the new bane of my existence.

I could not get that thing open!  I took the lock with me for over an hour while I was listening to my computer training.  I didn't get it open once.  My mom sent me a tutorial.  Nothing.  Over the course of the last week I've probably had to ask four or five people to open the dang thing for me just so I could get started on my shift.  Security was being compromised, people.

So I went and bought a new padlock with a key.  This is seriously the best invention over.  I almost starting laughing hysterically the first time I used the key to open the lock and the little beauty opened.  I probably shouldn't really be that excited about this, but that little key has honestly taken so much stress out of my life!

Next stresser...Rachel and I are flying to San Francisco on Monday.  Neither of us has ever flown before.  We're going alone.  Saaavvvvve usssss....

dead pigeons + 31 days : : seven

awkward:

- I was in the Walmart bathroom the other day with Rachel.  Not knowing she'd gone out of the bathroom, I heard someone in another stall who sounded like they were taking a lot of toilet paper, so I decided to ask "Rachel" if she was planning on taking the entire toilet paper roll.  And then I realized Rachel had left, I was criticizing a complete stranger (who didn't say anything, by the way), and I dashed out of there as fast as I possibly could.  I always do stuff like that. :(
- tripping over a curb.  Thankfully this didn't actually happen to me, but I saw a guy do it and now...I'm going to be really paranoid about those humps of concrete sneaking up and getting me.
- Rachel ran over a pigeon this week.
- I slept on my neck wrong last night, so it's killing me today.  When I told Chloe about this she said that I didn't sleep on it wrong--I obviously have chicken pox. ;D

awesome:
- I'm finally on spring break!  So happy to be done with the midterms I had, and have my papers all written.  Praise the Lord!
- getting out of my last class today a whole hour early!  My teacher was basically like, "Here's your test.  Take it home, bring it back after spring break.  Bye."
- Dairy Queen has this awesome special where you buy a blizzard and get one for $0.99.  We will be seeing that place a lot this month.
- working out four straight days this week!  I always find a reason to skip a day, but I didn't let myself this week and I'm really glad.
- Chloe and I are planning a sisters' day next week for spring break--we're going to go see a movie, buy some new nail polish, and maybe go to the zoo.

there's a taco in my lung

awkward:

- I ate a taco so fast, I felt like it was in my lung because of the chest pain I experienced afterwards.  So.  There's that.
- I got an email from Sears that said "You have $30 in rewards points!" Went to check it out...oh wait, it's actually $0.04.
- Next Wednesday I have two midterms and two papers due. :(
- We must have spent the first hour in my science class talking about a bunch of mumbo jumbo because all those women feel like they need to contribute everything they've ever thought about to the conversation.  Such a waste of time.

awesome:

- my amazing father spent all day today working on my car and saved me and Rachel about a bazillion dollars rather than having to take it to the shop.  He is awesome!!!
- I signed up for an online songwriting course.  It sounds pretty cool!  I'm excited. :)
- I bought some candles from Bath & Body this week and I love them!  I've always wanted to be a "candle person", but I've never really had a place to burn a candle that wouldn't catch a book on fire or be within a pet's reach.  Now I finally have a spot, and I'm taking full advantage of it!  Mmm.
- I got some books at a thrift store this week, and since I'm actually in a reading mood I'm trying to devour everything I've ever wanted to read before the mood goes away.
- Jane Eyre.  I've been listening to the audiobook while working out at Planet Fitness, and I love it!  Mr. Rochester finally declared his love today, so now I have to wait till next week when I go to the gym again to find out what happens.

let's drink water

 via
awkward:

- taking this 40 Day Challenge where you only drink water for the 40 days of Lent.  I've never done Lent before--never even really knew when it was until I worked at McDs last spring and it seemed like all we sold was fish--but I thought this was an interesting challenge, and I can always drink more water.  I admit, however, it's a bit daunting--I drank a gallon of peach tea in preparation.
- the wall mirrors that go all the way around the main room of Planet Fitness.  I have scoliosis and walk kind of lopsidedly, but I never realized how bad it was 'til I saw myself walking in one of those mirrors.  So, thank you, Planet Fitness, for slowly breaking down my positive self image. ;)
- my science teacher this week, after he realized that Valentine's Day was coming up.  After we all teased him about not getting anything yet for his girlfriend, he proceeded to inform us that every day with him is like Valentine's Day, "and every night is like the Fourth of July."

awesome:

- quitting my 365 challenge.  It is such a relief to not have to worry about taking a picture every single day. Yay for failure!
- Valentine's Day!!!!  I ended up skipping school today (because my car is falling apart), but I did go to Walmart to join the masses of boyfriends, fiances, and husbands desperately searching for some passable flowers and maybe some chocolate. I had a hard time holding myself back from running down the aisles singing "All the Single Ladies".  Go watch this cute video for some Valentine's Day cuteness--my favorite is the little red-haired girl. :)
- prayer for Djamsel would be awesome--there's some issues with the center he's been attending and I'm not really sure what the outcome will be.  Hopefully it'll all be resolved soon--please pray that his center won't be closed!
- an A on my science test!
- getting tested to see if I'm able to donate bone marrow this week!  I was encouraged to do this by my science teacher, who knew someone who has leukemia and is in need of a transplant.  The only thing that was kind of weird was that, when I went to my teacher's school to get tested, of course he was there.  Nothing like chatting with your professor while awkwardly swabbing the inside of your mouth--I felt like we were really bonding.
- Happy Valentine's Day!

hemming my jeans

awkward:

- new experiences.  Specifically ones where I just don't know what's going to happen.
- tearing up when writing tragic fiction.  Argh.  Seriously, why do I get so attached to fake people?  *runs up to a mannequin for a hug*
-staying up 'til midnight so I can watch the next episode of one of my favorite shows on Hulu.  And then the ending was so horrible, I was literally speechless.  I honestly couldn't even think for a straight minute, my brain was so fried.
- the heater being turned up way too high in my classroom, and all of us sweating our skin off.  My teacher miss-spoke when someone asked a question and blamed it on the heatstroke he was suffering from.  Then we couldn't find anything to prop the door open with, so someone had to just sit against it.
- almost crashing...while driving someone outside of your family.  Oh, don't worry, I do this all the time--ahh!

awesome:

- this picture that I found while looking through my old archives.  Tell me that isn't the cutest little face you've ever seen.
- Valentine's Day is next week!!!  I can't wait to get all dressed up and go to...school.
- jeans that are actually too long.  So exciting!  I actually had to hem them...I don't know if that's ever happened before.
- God's sovereignty and grace even in little things like my dog dying.  It was perfect and fast and painless, just how I'd hoped even though it didn't go according to my "plan" at all.
- having a science today--completely unprepared for it--and then it was open book, open notes, and we all partnered up.  Awesome!
- Oreos.  Oreos are clearly awesome.

bumping my gums

awkward:

- my science teacher wearing a cardigan.  I'm convinced he's an 80-year-old man trapped in a 35-year-old's body.  He also loves to say he's "bumping his gums", which means he's just talking.
- thinking I had two days to finish a paper and then realizing it's due tomorrow.  Cue panic!
- getting out of the car the other day, picking up my water bottle upside down, and dumping it all over my lap and inside the car.  Seriously, didn't this happen last week?  And then I was walking toward the front door and this huge gust of wind swept what seemed like half the snow on the roof blowing into my face so I was just stumbling along blindly, hoping I wouldn't trip and kill myself.  Just keeping it real, people.
- accidentally sending a text to the wrong person, coincidentally the only person who would actually be offended by it. *facepalm* Friends, it was bad.  But the person I offended was so gracious--she took my accidental text (which she could have taken to mean "I hate you"; that's not what I meant, but she could have taken it that way) and was so sweet and kind about it.  Last time I'm ever speaking ill of anyone.  So that part of it's actually pretty awesome.
- skipping math class last night.  It was a spur of the moment decision--I was already at school for Rachel's classes--and we were just pulling out of the parking lot, me rejoicing because I hadn't run into my teacher, and she took our parking spot.  She was smirking at me, too--she knew what I was up to. :(

awesome:

- three days off school! Yay!!!  These four-day weeks are killing me...I'm such a lazy bum, used to just going two days.
- new followers even when I'm not trying to get my blog "out there".  Yay for results + no effort!
- writing inspiration.  If only it were November=Nanowrimo time.  I feel like inspiration just goes out the window during that month.
- finally figuring out how to do my math homework.  I'd been lost for days--finally coming to the light!
- not having a test today!!!  I so wasn't ready.
- this song--I never really liked Hawk Nelson before, but I really like this song!
- isn't this little video so cute?  It's the little prequel movie before Wreck-It Ralph. Aww.

from the darkness

awkward:

- pretty much convinced that I have fleas.  They follow me everywhere.  But I have killed four today!  Yes!  There has been some not-so-subtle rejoicing with every murder.
- I put my water bottle in my purse after class, thinking it'd be okay, and it spilled everywhere.  It even soaked through the leather into my jeans.  But thankfully nothing was damaged.
- my bedroom is becoming more and more of a dungeon.  First Jonah's tank light went out, then the lightbulb in the lamp next to his tank burst.  It's so dark...I'm afraid!

awesome:

- tried ramon noodles for the first time tonight--yum!
- quarks.  Quarks are awesome.  I learned about these little buggers in my science class last week.  On New Year's Eve we watched a movie at my church about creation and how everything's singing and praising God.  Watch this to get a taste of it!  Anyway, quarks are little tiny parts of protons and neutrons in an atom.  If you break open a proton, there are three quarks, and if you break open a quark, the leading theory says that there are little rhythms inside, little tiny sounds.  Isn't that awesome?  Even something that tiny is joining in the song of praise to the Lord.
- my first science quiz was take-home!  Which is great because I would have been doomed if I'd had to do it in class--it's like a bazillion times harder than I'd expected!
- the show Flashpoint.
- finally done with school for the week!

my floor is dehydrated

awkward:

- being so hungry...but it's not 5 PM yet, so I can't eat dinner.  Dinner must be after 5.
- being so afraid of falling off the treadmill at Planet Fitness, I'll never go faster than a quick walk.  I just know once I start running I'll trip and kill myself.
- buying Rachel a nice, big coffee at Dunkin Donuts, and then spilling it all over the car floor.  And then going back to get another one and seeing the same employees and being like, Yeah...I'm back.  Thought the floor looked...thirsty.
- having to pay $85 per test to get my teaching certification--and I have to take three!  I mean, why am I paying them?  They should be paying me.
- my science teacher not being able to cuss while he's teaching, so he says "gripes" all the time.  What are you, 80?
- dancing to a song while I'm driving, and then passing a police officer.  Don't worry, sir--both hands on the wheel, see?  While my feet are dancing.

awesome:

- having my science teacher explain the certification process for teachers here, and making it sound so much simpler than if I'd just read all those pamphlets and going to an academic advisor.
- basically just my science teacher--his class is a blast.  I think he gets bored when he's teaching the basics of chemistry, which we're learning now, so he'll just shout randomly about insignificant bits of information.  In an atom there are PROTONS, NEUTRONS, AND ELECTRONS!  Some of my other favorite quotes from him: "I just love bumping my gums about CHEMISTRY!"  "Nobody write this down.  Seriously, DON'T WRITE IT DOWN!"  "When did geek become chic?"
- my math teacher's step-by-step instructions for doing our homework: "Step 1, find your book.  Step 2, open your book."
- MLK holiday on Monday.  No school!
