Chloe's 7th birthday

Yesterday was Chloe's 7th birthday! She had a bunch of her friends over, and we all had a great time. Praise God for giving her to us for seven years already!

She was so concerned that everything be perfect for her party.  She set the table and then went around and straightened all the chairs.

Ruthie loved watching Jonah run across the carpet.  He's taken to hiding in the closet.

Us older girls went sledding on our road, which is officially a sheet of ice.

I think my hair looks so dark and curly in this pic!  It's officially brown. :)

Rachael thought this card was very funny.

Happy birthday, baby girl!

how to: memorizing small portions of Scripture

If there's one thing I've learned through memorizing Scripture over the years and attending a group at my church whose goal is to encourage others in this endeavour--it's that memorizing God's Word is hard.  It's hard to be disciplined, hard to have focus, etc.  However, in the years since I started memorizing verses through AWANA, I feel I've developed some techniques, and I thought it might be helpful to share them.  These are just ones that have worked for me, but hopefully they'll be helpful to someone else!

Tips for Memorizing Small Portions of Scripture

Choose wisely.  When I'm trying to choose what to memorize, I can be overwhelmed by all the choices.  Should I memorize something that will be helpful when I'm sharing the gospel with someone?  Something that could be an encouragement to others?  Something that I feel will help me in battling a specific sin?  The Scripture you choose to memorize should be your choice, through the Lord's leading, not just because everyone else is memorizing it.  If the Lord brings a verse to mind that you want to have in your heart, choose that!

Write it out.  When I'm focusing on a short verse or portion of the Word, I like to write it out--in my journal, on an index card, on my blog, etc.  I like playing around with typography on photographs I've taken.  It's just really helpful for me to focus on the verse as a whole by writing it out.

Go over it everyday.  No exceptions.  My grandpa told my dad once that, even if he had a really busy day ahead of him and didn't feel like he had enough time to read his Bible, he tried to read just one verse.  The Lord works through portions of His Word that are even as small as that, so why not let that one verse be the one you're memorizing?

Sit down.  For individual verses, I find I do really well sometimes when I just sit down and memorize the entire thing.  Just taking half an hour out of your day to cement those words into your head can end up being a real encouragement for you the rest of the day!

Repeat, repeat, repeat.   We all know how easy it is to lose what we've memorized, whether it be facts for a test, words to a song, or a verse.  In the first couple days, or even weeks, after I've memorized a verse, I try to go over it every day.  Once I feel I really have it down, I'll let myself go a few days without repeating it, but it's still necessary to repeat it often.  Otherwise it'll be gone, and I have to start all over again!

Pray.  God's the One helping you through this!  He created your mind, He knows your pace, and He going to help you the whole way.

Enjoy.  Scripture is God's Word to us.  I find I most enjoy memorization when I focus on what God's saying to me--encouraging me, convicting me, reminding me of His love.  His Word is beautiful, and we shouldn't ever forget to view it that way!

One of my favorite verses that I've memorized is Galatians 5:1 - "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery."  This is one of my favorite verses to use in fighting sin.  Usually I'll just remind myself of the first part of the verse--you are free!--and that's enough.  Those are my favorite verses to memorize--short, sweet, and powerful.  Sometimes you don't need a bomb to shake the enemy off, just a series of powerful little punches!

I wait for the LORD, my soul does wait, and in His word do I hope.
Psalm 130:5

I'm going to write another post on memorizing larger portions of Scripture within the next few days--keep looking for it!

Everyday's Thanksgiving, Part #41

I'm thankful for:

0801. encouragement--through sermons, books, people, etc.

0802. being able to go to Gravity Park tonight--we had so much fun!

0803. vitamins

0804. a nice, relaxing Christmas break.  It seemed way too fast, but I'm excited to start up with my classes again on Monday.

0806. staying in contact with people from Glorieta.

0807. piano covers

0808. that I don't actually have to take an 8:30 AM class next semester.  I really messed up with my schedule so I have to take a night class now, but at least I don't have to wake up really early!

0809. that the Lord never allows me to be broke "without hope". :)

0810. brown leather boots

0811. Chloe's seventh birthday on Saturday!  I cannot believe she is so big.

0812. looking forward to doing a prelude on Sunday.  Let's hope it turns out well...I always seem to suffer grievous mishaps when I play guitar or sing in front of people.

0813. aviators

0814. my first college science class this semester.  I think I'm going to be getting through it only by the grace of God.

0815. being able to spend parts of both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve with my church family

0816. a mission Sunday this week--I'm so excited to hear about what everyone has been doing through missions in my church!

0817. finally having 1 Corinthians 1 memorized, and moving on to chapter 2!

0818. a new camera!!!!

0819. my little "family" of pets

dirty little hands

Over the past two days I have been reading "Kisses from Katie" by Katie Davis, a young woman serving the Lord through her ministry to children in Uganda.  I have been loving this book because Katie is doing exactly what I want to do in India once I graduate--minister to orphans, bring them into my home, love on them as Jesus would.

Reading this book got me to thinking about my time in Mexico in November.  I only went for about 24 hours total, but I just loved my time at the orphanage there.  Children are so eager to love on anyone who comes their way, and these kids were no different.

In the very first chapter of "Kisses from Katie", Katie recalls an experience she had with a little boy who hurt himself, and how she was able to comfort him.

On the second day that I was in Mexico, I tried to get to know a little boy named Arian.  I had a really hard time getting the pronunciation of his name right, and I could tell he was frustrated with me.  He was quiet, and not very eager to get to know me.

I went outside with the kids to watch them play, and while I was out there Arian tripped and fell, making his nose and lips bleed, as well as scuffing up his hands so that they bled.  He sat there for a moment crying inaudibly until I rushed over to him, hauled him up off the ground, and took him to the bathroom to clean him up.

There weren't any tissues in the bathroom, but I'd brought some with me on a whim (thank God for that whim!).  Arian stopped crying as soon as I started taking care of him, but my heart just broke for him as I cleaned him up.  His eyes held such sadness.  I gave him a wet tissue to hold to his bleeding nose while I gently wiped the blood off of his forehead and lips.

Arian's poor little hands were scuffed and bleeding, and I couldn't help but kiss them as I cleaned them up.  Now you have to understand what a huge step this was for me.  I was in Mexico.  I was terrified of getting some sort of disease or something from germs or contaminated water.  And I kissed this little boy's hands.

And then we went and watched a movie with all the other children.  Arian let me put my arms around him and hold him the entire time.  And I gave out two entire packs of chicle to all the kids.  Chicle = gum.

I worry a lot about my plans to serve in missions after I graduate.  I'm too young, too inexperienced, too uneducated, too single, too naive.  But the Lord has been teaching me that He has made me exactly who I am so that I can do the work He has for me.  As I've been memorizing 1 Corinthians 1 He's really been driving that home: "God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world, and the despised, God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God."  He has given me a desire to serve children.  And I'll kiss 1000 more dirty little hands to help show God's love to those kids.

And He holds all of them, including Arian, closer than I ever could.

new year's resolutions '13

I did pretty darn well with most of my resolutions for 2012...and then I did terrible on some of them.  But 2012 was a great year!  I'm glad the world didn't end, and am looking forward to 2013.

I have five primary resolutions that I'll be focusing on in 2013.  They come from a sermon my dad preached yesterday called "New Year's 2013: 5 Resolutions Sure to Spark a Revival in 2013".  I thought it was fantastic; if you'd like to listen to it yourself, you can go here to download it.

Primary Resolutions

1. Revel and rest in the sovereignty of God (Psalm 46).

2. Study the Word--read and meditate on it.  Don't be so concerned about reading the Bible through in a year, but rather on learning.

3. Pray (Matthew 6:9-13).

4. Fellowship with other believers (Acts 2:46-47).

5. Take a risk.

Secondary Resolutions

1. Treat my body and mind in a way that honors the Lord.

2. Memorize 1 Corinthians 1-4, as well as Psalms 46 and 51.  Also, review 1 Timothy fairly often so I don't lose it.

3. Read one good, edifying book every month.  Last year, I read 11 books in this category, but for the entire year I only read 31 books, while in 2011 I read 70.  So I want to try and read a lot more this year, specifically focusing on edifying books but also on classics, biographies, and things of that sort.

4. Give liberally, even if it seems like too much sometimes.

As for His failing you, never dream of it--hate the thought.  The God who has been sufficient until now should be trusted to the end.
-- Charles Spurgeon

5. Get my computer fixed.  I think it has a virus or something, and I am just sick and tired of it.  So I'd like to figure out what's wrong with it sometime over the course of the year and fix it.

6. Complete a 365 photography project.  Some projects like this focus on a specific aspect of photography, such as self portraits, but since it's my first time doing something like this I'm just going to focus on taking at least one picture every single day, now that I have a camera!  I'll be posting on it about once a week, especially since it's on my bucket list.

Yesterday I finished reading "Tramp for the Lord" by Corrie ten Boom.  She ended her book with a poem that I thought was fitting to end a year on.

God is working His purpose out,
As year succeeds to year:
God is working His purpose out
And the time is drawing near--
Nearer and nearer draws the time
The time that shall surely be,
When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God,
As the waters cover the sea.
-- A. C. Ainger
